You can tell Halloween must be close because the ghost and goblins were out in college football this week. That is about the only way you can explain what happened in the Top Ten as five of the ten got upset.
The goblins went to work Thursday night as Arizona upset Oregon. Then the ghosts came out Saturday and put a spell on Alabama, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma… then late Saturday night put UCLA in the grave. In my 32 years of being a college coach I can’t ever remember this happening.
Usually when a top ten team gets upset on a Thursday night game, every head coach of the remaining top ten team addresses what happened with their team in their Friday night team meeting. I can hear the head coach now,
“Men, you see what happens when you don’t bring your A game. You better be ready for a 60-minute battle, that other team can make their whole year by beating you. You’re gonna get their best shot, they’re gonna come out swinging. You’ve been here before men, you better come loaded for bear and leave every once of energy you have on that field, play every play like its your last, these opportunities only come around once in a lifetime. I want your total attention, DO NOT turn your cell phones on tomorrow morning, I want 100% of your concentration on your assignments and this game. Get your personal business handled tonight. Men they haven’t worked as hard as you did this summer, they want to go to heaven, but they don’t want to die … ”
OK, I got a little carried away, but you get the idea. His players have more than likely seen one of the earlier upsets on TV and know everything the coach has said is true. What about UCLA, they played late Saturday night so their players were well aware of the previous four upsets. But you guessed it, they just don’t listen.
When the ghost and goblins come out … there’s nothing you can do!
