I have been fairly pleased with the weekly rankings of the Selection Committee for the college football playoffs so far. It is a good committee…and politically correct committee…it’s just not the best committee to rank and evaluate college football teams. My only complaint was that you could have easily replaced the committee members who had no coaching experience with more qualified members who have actually coached the sport.
Just to name a few…coaches like Mike Bellotti, R.C. Slocum, Jim Tressel, Phillip Fulmer, and Rick Nueheisel would have added more football credibility and expertise. As we near the end of the season, picking the top four teams is really not that difficult to do. Wins and losses, strength of schedule, head to head competition, and margin of victory make ranking the Top four fairly obvious. Where the coaching knowledge and expertise of committee members who have actually coached becomes a factor is when you seed the teams on that last ranking. Who you play in the playoff game before the National Championship Game could make all the difference in the world.
With Florida States performance the last few weeks, my guess is that 3 of the top 4 teams would all pick FSU as their opponent in the first playoff game if they had a choice. Therefore, having experts rank and seed them would only make too much sense. I think having committee members that have actually had “skin in the game”, would give us the best assurance of a balanced and fair playoff. And by the way…I would be careful of wanting a piece of the Seminoles in that first week!
