The Call that kept Florida State Unbeaten

I would imagine many of you saw the great game Saturday night between #2 Florida State vs. #5 Notre Dame. It went back and forth all night, just like two heavyweight boxers exchanging blows for 15 rounds, with both fighters raising up off the mat time after time after being knocked down. Florida State secured the victory as Notre Dames quarterback Everett Golsons fourth down pass fell incomplete in the Florida State end zone.

The controversy in the game came a play earlier when Notre Dame completed a touchdown pass that would have secured a Fighting Irish victory. The officials called it back because of an illegal pick play by a Notre Dame receiver. After playing receiver in college and coaching receivers in college for 14 years, this looked like the proper call. I have called, coached, and taught that exact play for many years. If my receivers would have executed the play like Notre Dame, I would have expected the same penalty. I saw a great comment and video explaining the call by Keyshawn Johnson, the great receiver who played successfully for many years in the pros. He, and other video replay specialist all agree it was the correct call.

I know Brian Kelly, the Notre Dame Head Coach made the statement that his receivers did exactly what they were coached to do. Based on all the experts that are paid to make this call, he might want to reconsider how he is teaching this route. If not, he might want to make sure he schedules all home games, where the “Luck of the Irish” might help that official keep his flag in his pocket.
