College football will “officially” start this week. Its the time of the year when every team has the goal of winning their conference championship and being one of the four teams that make it to the National Championship playoff. As a coach you want your team to dream big and set their goals high. But you also want them to be realistic as they start the season. If you put all your effort and energy into making it to the National Championship game, then lose your first two games, what do you tell your team the next ten games? There is a fine line you walk as a Head Coach when trying to convince your team that they are good enough to win it all. Because, just when you think you have them convinced, bam, you lose your first game.
What a great job Urban Meyer did last year when Ohio State lost their first game at home to a very average Virginia Tech team. He then had to convince his team and staff that the goal was still reachable, even though the most difficult part of their schedule remained. There is probably about 20 teams that have the talent and depth to be the National Champions. But you have to stay healthy and I believe, you have to be a little lucky. Some coaches feel that luck has nothing to do with winning a National Championship. However, it was Bear Bryant who reportedly said, “I’d rather be lucky than good”.
