College football just finished their first year where the National Champion was determined by a four-team playoff. Most fans agreed that it was a huge success and talk has already started about expanding the playoff to 8 teams. The Selection Committee says “no way” are we going to expand past 4 teams anytime soon!!! I say, not so fast. Now that the hugely successful March Madness has started with their 65 basketball team playoff, look for the pressure to remain for football to expand. Take a look at how quickly basketball went from 32 to 65 teams. 1975- 32 teams, 1979-40 teams, 1980-48 teams, 1985-64 teams, and 2001- 65 teams. As the basketball revenue increased, so did the number of teams. Obviously, the football playoffs won’t go to 65 teams, but look for it to quickly go to 6-8 teams. And with the NCAA generating over 1 billion dollars in revenues this year, look for the football selection committee to expand sooner … rather than later!!!
