With the NFL draft coming this week, everyone is waiting to see who is going to be the first pick. Will it be Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota, the tall athletic quarterback from the University of Oregon with no character issues or Jameis Winston, last years Heisman Trophy Winner..a pure pocket passer from Florida State University that has character issues?
The pick between these two quarterbacks has been debated in the public arena by every media source from TV to tweet for the last several months. There isn’t a football player, high school or college, that doesn’t understand that Jameis Winston’s off the field behavior could possibly cost him millions of dollars. But as you pick up the sports page this week and you look at the headlines you continue to see young athletes making the same mistakes.
A University of Florida player arrested for armed robbery, LSU defensive tackle suspended again, an Indiana defensive tackle arrested for battery, and a UCLA top signee arrested. We even had a college football coach arrested in a prostitution sting in California.
I understand we all make mistakes and as a head coach I had my share of players who made mistakes. But you would think with all that’s at stake and the microscope of the media watching your every move that these mistakes would be declining instead of on the rise. So as we watch and wait to see what this weeks draft reveals let’s see if the age old saying, “decisions have consequences” rings true.
