I flew to Phoenix, Arizona this past weekend to speak at a Coaches Clinic sponsored by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. About 300 coaches were in attendance at the event organized by Randy Chambers, who heads the Coaches Ministry in Arizona for FCA.
They are using a book by Dr. Jeff Duke called The 3-D Coach, dealing with the 3 dimensions of coaching. When I speak at these types of events I will also go over the 5 foundations of character, Commitment, Accountability, Responsibility, Discipline, and Sacrifice. All these are covered in more detail in my book, Winning Character, which was published by LifeWay Christian Resources years ago.
Well-known evangelist Billy Graham was one of the first to recognize the impact and influence that coaches have on young people. He actually felt that the coach might be “THE” most influential. And because of this, FCA has recently established a program to educate coaches on how best to handle this responsibility with a Christian foundation.
Not long ago, I heard this analogy concerning the influence of a coach that helps paint a clearer picture of their impact. If you slice an apple in half you will see just a few seeds. If you take one of those seeds and plant it, it grows a tree full of hundreds of apples. You can easily see the influence that just one Christian coach can have on a team!!!
