Two Coaches That Stood Tall In 2014

There were some great coaching jobs done this year in college football. You could make a legitimate case for several coaches that would be very deserving of Coach of the Year. After being a Head Coach for 12 years there are two that really stood out to me, Gary Patterson of TCU and Urban Meyer of Ohio State.

What impressed me about Gary Patterson is that he is a defensive minded coach that is a big believer of defense, field position and then offense. His offensive philosophy was mostly geared to run/run action pass. But he made a change last year offensively, went against his background philosophically, and went to a no huddle shotgun spread offense. The result was he about played for a National Championship and might be the best team in America. Urban Meyer achieved his success another way. Ohio State started the season with 4 new starters on the offensive line, his great QB, Braxton Miller, injured and out for the year, and an early season loss to Virginia Tech. He ran off several impressive victories with his second team QB, who then was lost for the year. And now, with his third team QB, he defeats #1 Alabama and is playing Oregon for the National Championship.

Like I said earlier, there are several coaches that did a great job this year, but these two, Gary Patterson and Urban Meyer, were at the head of the class.
