Since football season is upon us, Tommy has asked me to write a blog about what it is like to be a coach’s wife. So here it goes…
I believe that it takes a special kind of woman to be a good coach’s wife. One of my favorite sayings is, “Behind every great man is a good woman!” The life of a coach is very demanding and he needs a partner that will have his back and can take over the responsiblities on the home front. I can say that I got into this role with my eyes wide open.
Tommy and I began dating when we were in high school and his father was the head coach at West Virginia University. I was able to see how his mother handled being a coach’s wife and she served as a great role model for me when Tommy became a coach. Coach’s wives must be very self-sufficient and must deal with the children and household disasters on their own. I learned this lesson early on in our marriage.
I remember one time when our kitchen was flooding because of a faulty water line to our ice maker, I called Tommy to tell him about the problem. His response was that he was in a meeting and he wouldn’t be home until around 10:00PM. I solved the problem on my own with a little help from my neighbors!
One of the hardest parts of being a coach’s wife is hearing your husband being criticized. I learned to never read the paper or listen to the sports talk shows. The coaching life is one of highs and lows! Tommy and I had to put our faith in something bigger than football. We put our faith and trust in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Football was a part of our lives for more than 30 years and we are grateful for the many memories. As this football season begins, I will be praying for those special ladies who call themselves coach’s wives.
